GOPOINT / OPEN WEB GUIDE
What is llms.txt?
A plain-language guide and a quick way to check whether your site publishes one.
THE SHORT ANSWER
A small text file with a modest job.
llms.txt is a proposed file that a website owner can publish at the root of a domain, commonly as /llms.txt. It is intended to point language models toward selected information about a site. Think of it as a short guide for a system that may be trying to understand a business, its documentation or its most useful pages.
It is not a replacement for a website, sitemap, robots.txt file or good content. It does not guarantee that an assistant will crawl, understand, cite or recommend your business. The file is a voluntary addition whose usefulness depends on whether tools choose to read it and whether its links lead to accurate, helpful information.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Useful context, not a ranking switch.
A well-organized file may make important pages easier to locate for systems that support it. That is a reasonable use, but it should not be confused with proof of visibility or a direct ranking signal. Search and answer products use different systems, change over time and do not promise that a file will affect a result.
Keep the file concise, current and tied to real pages. It should help a reader understand what the website contains rather than repeat broad marketing claims. Every linked page still needs to explain its subject clearly, show relevant evidence and work for people. If your core service information is unclear, improving the page itself is a more durable first step than creating another index file.
WHAT THE FILE CAN CONTAIN
Point to information you already maintain.
A useful llms.txt can include a short description of the organization and a selective set of links to the most useful pages. Depending on the site, that may include a service overview, documentation, product information, support guidance or a page that explains the team's work. Each link should point to a stable public destination that provides real detail.
Review it when your site changes. Remove outdated URLs, avoid sending readers to several pages that repeat the same claim and do not include private material. A file with a title, a brief description and meaningful links is easier to review than a long list of unannotated addresses. The checker below reports these simple content signals without treating them as a score of AI visibility.
HOW TO READ THE RESULT
A basic check is not a full technical audit.
The quick check requests the public /llms.txt address and reports whether a file was found, whether it appears to contain a title and description, how many links it detects and any basic issues returned by the check service. A missing file is not automatically a problem. An invalid or incomplete file is an invitation to inspect it, not proof that your business is invisible.
Use the result as a starting point. Confirm that the file is served from the correct domain, that its links open the intended pages and that the content reflects your current business. Do not include confidential information or assume that a file changes how every assistant behaves. A fuller report can be requested if you want GoPoint to review the public result.

QUESTIONS, BEFORE YOU START
What this file can and cannot do.
What is llms.txt?+
llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file that can give language models a concise guide to useful information on a website. It is not a standard ranking factor and does not guarantee that an AI assistant will use or cite a site.
Does adding llms.txt improve search rankings?+
There is no established evidence that the file directly improves traditional rankings or guarantees AI citations. It can provide an additional organized resource, but useful pages, accessible information and sound technical foundations matter more.
What does the checker review?+
The quick check reports whether a public file was found and checks for a title, a description and links. A full report can be requested by email.
Do I need to share my email to run the check?+
No. The quick checker works without an email address. An email is requested only when you ask GoPoint to send a fuller report.
